In astrology, Pluto is intense, transformative, and mysterious.
In relationship astrology, Pluto shows up as obsession, power struggles, jealousy, and karmic ties. It brings out your shadow and demands you evolve.
Pluto takes about 250 years to orbit the Sun, spending over a decade in each zodiac sign. While retrograde (which lasts several months), it often dips back into the previous sign.
So let’s talk about Pluto activity in personal and relationship astrology.
You pull up your chart and see:
“Pluto conjunct Moon 2°” — What does that mean? Is it important?
First, get familiar with orbs.
The tighter the orb (the smaller the number), the stronger the energy.
Since Pluto moves so slowly, keep your orbs below 3° for it to really count.
Exceptions:
• Pluto aspecting the Ascendant, MC, IC, or Descendant
• A retrograde Pluto
In those cases, you can stretch the orb up to 5°.
Example:
My Pluto is at 19° Scorpio.
Let’s say I also have Venus at 21° Scorpio.
That’s a 2° orb — so, this is a tight Pluto-Venus conjunction.
Before comparing two charts (synastry), it’s good to understand each personal (natal) chart on its own.
Why?
Because someone already Plutonic (i.e. familiar with intense emotional terrain) may handle the transformation better than someone who isn’t.
To identify Plutonic energy in a birth chart:
• Does Pluto make tight aspects to personal planets or angles?
• Do you have planets/points in Scorpio?
• Do you have placements in the 8th house?
To identify Plutonic energy in a relationship:
• What kind of Pluto/Scorpio/8H energy does each person carry independently?
• Does one partner’s Pluto make tight aspects to the other’s personal planets or angles?
• Are there 8th house overlays in synastry?
The more of these you have, the more Plutonic the relationship.
